August 21, 2010 (Kirkwood MO)-
The Brown Stockings welcomed the Murphysboro Clarkes to Emenneger Nature Park for the first ever meeting between the two clubs. The Clarkes may sound like they were named after a candy bar, but their sweet timely hitting left a bad taste in St.Louis mouths. The wheels fell off the Stocking wagon in the top of the first as the visitors took a quick 4-0 lead.
aaaaa New Daddy, Sticks, singled and did his job as a lead off man for St.Louis to started a comeback. RBI by Franz, Country, and Thunder edge the Brosox closer 4-3. Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of 5th, St.Louis with the top of the lineup due up. Sticks scampered to third on an over throw, Franz doubled him in, and Country then capped a 3 hit 2 RBI match by singling in the tying run. But it was not enough as the Clarkes tallied in top of the final frame to take a 7-6 win.

* Bill Herbert II made his first showing as arbitrator for the Brown Stockings. Decked out from head to toe in vintage apparel, Bill did a great service for the team. Huzzah Bill! |
| |
|
| |
* Steve Bushong and Family were also in attendance. Steve's Great Grandfather, Albert John “Doc” Bushong, played on the St. Louis Brown Stockings from 1885-1887. Earlier in the Summer Steve attended a VBB game in Cleveland (which Doc had also played on from 1883-1884). The Brown Stockings want to thank them for their kind support! |

August 7, 2010 (St.Louis MO)- The Brown Stockings visited the Cyclone at Lafayette Park to renew their friendly rivalry with their Sister club. Cinderellas sisters treated her better. Match one started out with a story book beginning as Lightning, Numbers, and Babe all singled and scored. But their fairy tale lead was turned into a Fractured fairy tale when the Cyclone rallied in their last at bat.
aaaaaThe next match was a Grim fairy tale for the Stockings from the outset. The Lafayette boys took a 3-1 lead and never gave it back. The only truly shining moment for the Browns was when Franz shocked the masses with his incredible grab on a foul. With a runner on third and one, out a weak foul went out of play near home on the third base side. Ein Deutscher then dodge a minefield of bats, cranks and bench to streak across and make his amazing one handed catch on the bound.
Afa aAfter the match Franz said, "That was fun making that play. It happened so fast that I really can't remember much. What I do remember is that I came extremely close to taking out Duchess. As I was going for the ball, I remember thinking, 'Oh no, I'm going to hit Duchess'. I'm very thankful that I somehow avoided her because that would have been a terrible ending. I really appreciated the Cranks and teams reaction to the play. That really "pumped me up", as Hans and Franz would say.
Notes:
|
* Lightning lead the club on the day with 4 hits and 3 runs tallyed. |
| |
|
| |
*Slug performed admiringly as he took the reins as Captain. He had to juggle late changes in the line up and did a great job with his introduction. |
| |
|
| |
*A special welcome to Bill Herbert from midtown who was in attendance with his friend. Bill has generously agreed to be the Brown Stockings arbitrator at their next home match. |
| |
|
| |
* Thanks again to our own Duchess, who made a sunny day even brighter by showing up, and looking lovely, in 1860's era dressing. She also kept score. |
| |
|
| |
* Spags had friends in attendance from his job, along with his son Sam. The Brown Stockings currently hold the future rights to Sam Pagano. |

VINTAGE BASE BALL COMES TO WEST COUNTY |
2010 is the Inaugural season of the St.Louis Brown Stockings Vintgae Base Ball Club. The team is still forming and in need of ballists who can help us preserve, perpetuate, and promote the game of base ball as it was played during its formative years in the nineteenth century.
The Brown Stockings will join other local clubs in
presenting the game of base ball as it was actually played in accordance with the rules, equipment, uniforms, field specifications, customs, practices, language, and behavioral norms of the period.
Its members will conduct all matches, meetings, and other activities--both on and off the field--according to the highest standards of sportsmanship, gentlemanly behavior, courtesy, and respect for others.
